An organized brain is key to Technical Writing. We are not art full free spirits like novel writers. As ways back I asked on this listserv what was the key skill set of a Technical Writer. The most common response I got was skill in "structured (i.e., organized) writing". Of course this begs the question: What is structured writing. The answer to many is not readily apparent as, relatively minor formatting issues aside, structured writing is really all about analysis. That is, it is about coming up with a properly structured understanding of the products essential functionality, and then letting that understanding organize our writings.

I think it's important to talk to candidates in most cases, to get a
sense of their basic intelligence and how well organized that brain is.
Chaotic, sloppy people are not what you need. If someone is deficient
in experience, or degrees, but has intelligence, drive and mental
organization, there's no reason not to consider that candidate over
someone with more certifications but less of those traits.
