Consider this:

tech.writer1 wrote: Currently they are being called "steps," but that
isn't quite right as they each contain steps themselves.

Would referring to them as steps and sub steps work in your arena?

What you are describing actually *are* steps.

Also, by not using the term "task" at the top level, you could divide
your actions into Tasks and Steps.

Example:

Recharge the unit IAW the following 4 tasks:

Task 1 - Connecting Gas Hose

Step 1, Remove Socket Cover by.......

Step 2, Attach gas fitting by........

Task 2 - Charge Unit Start-UP

Step 1, yada-yada-yada-

Step 2, yada-yada-yada

Step 3, yada-yada-yada

Task 3 etc

Task 4 etc

HTH

Blessings,

Darren

To accomplish a particular task, four sets of steps have to be done.
What do you call these four things?

Currently they are being called "steps," but that isn't quite right as
they each contain steps themselves.

Something like part or section, but these and other thesaurus offerings
aren't clicking. Any ideas?
