Hi, all,

I'm already registered in a marrow donor program (HLA Registry) and was wondering if it made sense to also sign up for the one noted in the announcement about Emru Townsend's need for a donor.

So I asked. And here's the reply:

Thank you for your interest in the National Marrow Donor Program
(NMDP).

There are other registries that are separate from the NMDP. Donors are not encouraged to join more than one registry since patients are usually made aware of several registries and their physicians will search more than one registry when looking for a donor. Being listed with more than one registry gives false hope to patients. If you were listed with two or more registries, and came up as a match for someone, the patient would think they had several potential matches, when in reality, there is only one, you.

If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact us by e-mail or toll-free at 1 (800) 654-1247.

ANNOUNCE: An appeal for marrow donors

Many of you know Montreal techwriter Emru Townsend, who still
does an occasional bit of techwriting in addition to his many
other talents. Tragically, Emru was recently diagnosed with
leukemia, and it looks like he's going to need a bone marrow
transplant.

I know that our community is an amazingly warm-hearted group,
so I thought I'd enlist your aid to help find a donor. The
procedure for being tested is simple and painless, involving
nothing more than a blood test or cheek swab, depending on the
preferences in your medical jurisdiction. Actually donating
the marrow is a bit more complicated and painful, but not such
a major thing given how safe it is and how meaningful it would
be if you happen to match someone's genes well enough to be a donor.
