This is a common bit of misinformation. US UE rates are
based on the results of monthly surveys conducted by the
Dept of Commerce and the Dept of Labor. A statistical
sample group of US households across the country is
polled every month on the current employment status of
its members. Unemployment benefit rolls are not used
for this at all.
