Almost forgot a crucial point (possibly due to traumatic amnesia from
one of my own management nightmares):

Always insist that your authority equals your responsibility. Trust
me on this one: there's nothing quite as uniquely painful and
unpleasant as being held responsible for things you have no power to
change. If you're going to be managing people, make sure that you
have the whole tamale (the right to hire, fire, and discipline), and
make sure that your boss communicates your authority to the people
you'll be supervising. You can communicate this yourself if you're a
skilled manager, but it's easier if a higher authority does this for
you.

Anything else can be a recipe for disaster, or at least for a very,
very, very unpleasant time for everyone, and particularly for you.
