Note, though, that Subversion and most similar free or open source
tool are primarily intended for source code version management. You
*can* use them to manage generic documents (many of which are
binary file formats rather than plain text source files), but they don't
provide the same kind of UI or use model that document-oriented CMS
tools like Sharepoint and Documentum do. It's only natural that most
free software tends to be oriented toward the software development
process, because that's when the developers of the software get the
most direct benefit. Developers who produce software that doesn't
benefit thmeselves directly usually expect financial compensation for
their efforts.

The bottom line is that I am not aware of any free tool that offers
functionality that is directly comparable with CMS tools like Sharepoint
and Documentum.
