I'll forget about all of the different avenues this thread has taken.

I
started getting my Master's degree in Biomechanics. At that time, I
thought I'd continue for my Ph.D.. However, I wanted to get all my
coursework done while I was getting my Master's degree. One of the
minors I choose was Technical Communications. Later, I decided I didn't
want to move anywhere around the country to get the limited jobs in
Biomechanics. I actually wound up with two Master's Degrees--one in
Biomechanics and the other in Technical Communications. I spent the
first 7 years after college in a business analyst type position. At
this point, I don't know if it was a fallback career or not, but I've
never felt it was a sellout career.

I was actually wondering if I was going to read other's responses as to how they started in this profession.
