I've seen it used in computer and telecomm contexts since at least the
1970s.

When I first encountered it, I understood what it must mean, and I
thought it a nice turn of phrase for what it meant - recovering
smoothly, cleanly (no corruption), without loss, with minimal
disruption, and with minimal (or no) intervention. How would you say it
better?
