Not quite. Sometimes they want to see if you're a potential trouble spot from a previous job. Dell Computers, for example. If you disclose that you have worked for Dell earlier, they insist on getting your SSN before the will complete the application process. Supposedly, they want to check their records and see if you were a problem during the previous job. But in any case, you should never disclose your SSN through insecure means.

Does anyone know if AT&T does this SSN requirement? I recently had a phone call from a supposed recruiter, about a job opening with AT&T in Illinois. We had a conversatin about the job and my background for about 20 minutes, then he said that he needed my SSN. I absolutely refused to disclose it under any circumstances, and I haven't heard back from them since. I may have cost myself a job, but I also may have protected myself from being robbed blind, so I guess it evens out.
