Thank you, Gene, and everyone! You have given me excellent, substantive replies that will really help.

As to who owns the documentation, it used to be the product manager, who is gone, and now the insanely overworked guy above him technically owns it. It certainly never belonged to me, the lowly contractor!Â

If this issue has to come to the new owner's attention, I will be able to present professionally sound information. Because of you all. You are great!
