TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
If you work with a company that has support personnel, they can often
provide important insight. You might also look at their help tickets for
common issues that you might want to address in your documentation.
Other resources are salespeople (with a grain of salt), product marketing,
and any service engineers you might have.
If you work for yourself, or a very small company, you can go directly to
the users with a survey or quick feedback form in the Help. One company I
worked with brought users in once a year for training, and the documentation
team took the users to lunch. That was a great opportunity to ask them
questions about the applications and the documentation.
My $.02. Good luck.
