MS Word 2007 Help at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA103387981033.aspx,
describes the switches in detail.

IANAL, but I suppose the phrase, "there is little need to insert fields manually," is technically correct. Most people never need these switches; I've only heard them mentioned among tech writers.

MS Word is a sad hybrid of multi-level capabilities for disparate users. Or as Gene pointed out on this thread, "As with most jack-of-all-trades attempts, the result is something that is master of none."
