Some folks are putting documentation onto wikis, and a popular one for
that purpose is Doku-Wiki.

Here's an article on setting up this free software that you may find
useful: <http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/features/publish-and-manage-with-dokuwiki/>

Although I happen to prefer WordPress for this purpose personally,
others prefer a wiki arrangement for an online documentation base.

All in all, I believe we will continue to see more documentation
online rather than in discrete software installed on users' machines,
in parallel with the movement of more applications online as well but
by no means limited to SAAS setups.

Consider: having docs online means you can revise them at will so
that you are sure that those accessing them are always getting the
most current version. This has impact to the bottom line, too, as you
can clarify points that otherwise may result in tech support calls
(and costs).

Obviously, for those interested in access statistics, if you control
the server for online docs that no longer is an issue, and you don't
even need to pay big money for the feature! 8:)
