All labor is a commodity, and it always has been. The only difference between a
factory assembler whose job can be offshored with less decision-making effort
than ordering a latte and a top-echelon developer who can walk across the street
in the US and get a new job the same day the old one goes away is cost; how much
will it cost to hire and train someone else somewhere else, move projects, etc.
Becoming more "SME value-added" doesn't prevent a writer from becoming
commoditized, it merely increases the cost and effort involved in a decision to
offload the writer.
