If you take the broad definition "an economic good," then that's true.
The usual connotation, however, is of fungibility. In that sense, the
rarer your combination of capabilities, the less of a commodity you
are.

If you define the job to eliminate the need for specialized
capabilities, then job holders become commodities, regardless of their
capabilities. If you can expand your position to make greater use of
your rare capabilities, you're more likely to survive the next layoff.

The way to expand your position is to look for non-standard ways to contribute.

You should also build relationships with your organization's decision
makers, so you can

* Align your job with the organization's needs and objectives

* Become aware of changing circumstances while there is still time to act.


You can't do any of this sitting in a cubicle waiting for someone to
tell you what to do. ...RM
