Viv:

First of all, why are you using the Acrobat printer to create PDF
files? That method doesn't preserve hyperlinks or create bookmarks
from headings. Microsoft has a built-in save to PDF or XPS function
that does the trick rather nicely. If it's not built into your copy of
Word, you can you install the "Save as PDF or XPS add-on" from
Microsoft http://cli.gs/mspdf. It shouldn't be that hard to write a
quick VBA macro that automates the saving of an active document to a
calculated file name. Attach that macro to a toolbar button (Ribbon UI
or Quick Access Toolbar) and you're good to go. Open and click.

To keep it still within the MS domain, you could always use the VB
like scripting language "AutoIt" (formerly Auto-Hotkey) to create a
button on your desktop that lets you choose a directory of Word files,
and cycles through the saving as PDF routine one at a time until
complete. AutoIt is here: http://cli.gs/AutoIt

I like the WinBatch idea. It might be simpler than AutoIt. It's just
that AutoIt can be trained to think, and bridge multiple applications
if necessary.

Boo on the suggestion to convert your Word files through OpenOffice.
Why introduce another authoring tool into the mix? Content written in
Word has the best chance of not being messed up any further if it
stays in Word.
