I do have frequently-used-program (FUP) shortcuts, but that's only half
the struggle. For the less frequent programs, I have to Tab away from
the Search box.

These three gaps are very minor annoyances. The moderate annoyance is
that that Start menu is generally less configurable than it used to be.
And the major annoyance is that someone at MS figured I didn't need a
feature that they used to offer.

This is a work computer; the home PC will keep Win XP and Office 2003
till they pry them from its cold, dead hard drive.

Too bad about Type and Curse. LOL. I can see how that could be
frustrating if you use keyboard for everything.

I guess I never really thought about it since I moved away from using
Start Menu ages ago when MS allowed folders of shortcuts on the task
bar. I keep collections of tools I use all the time in these folders in
a system that predates Mac OS X "Stacks".

Have you thought about assigning shortcut keys to the apps you use all
the time? Takes less time than Windows-key Tab, and is a built-in
Windows feature. I used to use a free program called "Shortcut Map" to
assign program shortcuts without conflicting with others that existed
(it probably hasn't been updated for Windows 7).
