I like the peanut butter instructions especially if you then take a sample and try to make a sandwich. It can show what happens if you don't get all the details. If the kids make the sandwiches after your demo, it can be quite messy, but fun.

A different idea...the Marshmallow Challenge. It's not about writing. It's about collaborating, planning, prototyping, building, adapting. It takes about 20-25 minutes. Depending on how much time you have, you could then have the kids work in groups and write the instructions on how to build the best structure. This could take as much or as little time as you need. For instructions, see www.marshmallowchallenge.com. It's actually fun for all ages.

Our company always organizes an excellent program for the Take Your Kids to Work day, which is going to be on Wednesday. I've always given a short presentation on technical writing, and then given them a short exercise - writing the instructions for making a peanut butter sandwich. I'm getting bored with that though, and wondered if anyone had any ideas on something else I could give them; preferably something that doesn't require a lot of preparation.

Thanks in advance,
