If you expect it not to turn out the way you expect it to, and it
doesn't turn out the way you expect it to, then that means it did turn
out the way you expect it to.
On the other hand, if it does turn out the way you expect it to, then
that means it didn't turn out the way you expect it to.
But maybe that's what you meant.
