The contest idea was first suggested by a Whirler who wrote: "At a
previous gig, one of the product managers used them, and I thought it
was a pretty neat way to get submissions from a variety of designers."
So it's "loony" in your eyes, and "neat" in someone else's.

Again, just as with tech writing: In order to define quality, you need a
customer (or a customer's customer) who can tell the difference. I have
worked with companies for whom the contest idea would be a reasonable
solution. And they'd be smart enough to know that a huge cash prize was
not required.

I'm referring to the people who would be most likely to have to approve
the funding for the sort of exercise I was talking about, who in most
cases are the same people who would have come up with this loony
"contest" idea. Just trying to make it seem as absurd and expensive as
possible so they'll figure out for themselves that it's a bad idea.
