As far as I know, LaTeX is mostly used these days for scientific
publishing, due to its superior ability to output math and science
notation characters. I think it's also desired for the attractiveness of
its text output.

Otherwise, LaTeX is too "difficult" for most people's patience. I
suppose that it's truly ancient technology, by today's standards,
doesn't help either.
