I use Opera which seems to me to run with less of a mem footprint than Thnuderbird. It also has an actual DB system for managing the mail, from what I understand. The UI is good and the response time when searching is impressive. The only time I'm disappointed with it is when I'm using it as a browser and it's missing something where MS created a non-standard HTML standard, or when a website announces, "Your browser is not supported. Please use MSIE version (x) or better."
