Good morning Whirlers,

The work is underway for what should be a smooth transition of the list to
our new community forums. No need to panic, we do all the heavy lifting.
But we wanted to give you some details, and some things to be on the
lookout for, to make the move truly effortless.

*Base Category for all Discussions Started Via Email*

Discussions started with our normal email address will be located in the
“Technical Writing and Communications” category of the Forums (
community.techwhirl.com).

*Sending and Replying to Emails*

Starting a Discussion: No change from today - Send notes to
techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com

Replying to Emails: There’s a slight change if you use a filter or rule.
Currently, the techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com email address is used to deliver
all conversations, in addition to being used to start them. However, moving
forward the Forums admin / distribution email address is
discussions -at- techwhirl -dot- net -dot- And as a little tech background, the system uses
sub-aliased email addresses to make certain that your replies are aligned
to the correct discussion topic, so emails will be structured this way:
discussions+d[somenumber] -at- techwhirl -dot- net -dot-

We share this because some of you may be curious, and if you have filters /
rules set up in your Yahoo!, Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail or other email client,
you’ll need to update them to accept this address: @techwhirl.net (note
that going forward, any address with “techwhirl.net” as the domain
indicates it’s a system generated account) rather than the @
lists.techwr-l.com. We also suggest you check your SPAM settings on Monday
morning to ensure your email system continues to deliver your TechWhirl
discussions.

And, yes, conversations can be started by sending notes to
discussions -at- techwhirl -dot- net in addition to the address we’ll publicize, which
is discussions -at- techwhirl -dot- com -dot-

*Daily Digest*

As of today, the Forum platform does not have a “Daily Digest” option like
the one we use today. We’re exploring options, and the most likely choice
will use MailChimp’s RSS email updates. It’ll operate in a similar manner
except that you’ll be able to login to the Forum and leave comments when a
Discussion of interest appears.

For those of you who use an RSS Reader you’ll be able to subscribe to the
entire list via community.techwhirl.com /discussions/feed.rss. For those of
you interested in only following a particular category, you can find the
RSS feed by adding “/feed.rss” to the end of each URL (
community.techwhirl.com /discussions/categories/[category name]/feed.rss).

*Current Conversations*

At the point when we do the final cutover, some discussion threads may be
inflight. We’ll continue to capture those, and add them to the system
manually, so you may see a slight delay on some of those posts.

*Next Steps*

We have updated the website to direct all new joiners to the Forums and
have extracted a full list of our members as of yesterday afternoon. We
will spend the weekend refining the data and getting it ready to import
into the system. The import and final QA should take around 4-6 hours.

Once the QA check is done, Eric Ray (who has been helping us with all the
backend work) will then change the Techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com address over
to the Forums. We’ll then welcome you to the new Forums, send you each a
note with more information about your accounts and proceed to clean up any
inflight conversations.

Hang with us and please be patient. We’ve planned and tested this a few
times, so if we’re lucky the hiccups will only be small rather than big.

Thanks again being a member of our list.

Sincerely,

Connie / Al
