It's actually a status bar as Tony says but it has a tool on it - the
Settings button. The developers apparently expanded the status bar to
include a tool rather than making it a separate toolbar, so . . . .
It's Friday - I am not gonna' think about it today.

Apple lingo:
- Status bar - that which Tammy described
- Notification bar - a temporary banner that pops up and overlays the top of
the screen temporarily, if the user has chosen to display alerts as banners.
Robert posted a link to Apple's human interface guidelines, which would be
the best reference.
