"add-on", by definition (and by inference) refers to an optional feature.

Given that "Optional add-on" is therefore redundant, and Charlotte wants to avoid "optional", I'd just use "add-on feature"; and add a statement at the beginning of the doc that explains that add-ons must be purchased separately.

"Optional" is the standard term for extra-cost features. They are available but not mandatory, since you have to buy them.

You can eliminate any possible misunderstanding by saying something like "X is an optional add-in available in our app store" at the beginning of each discussion of such features.
