A "leading edge" in document authoring would be a clearly identifiable direction that everyone either is moving or wants to move, and as you can see from the range of responses here, there isn't one. The tools being offered as possible "leading edge" choices really represent a veritable soup of "bleeding edges," because the lack of consensus on a standard means that they're all potential candidates to become the next Interleaf or Ventura.
