Start ups go through phases. In the early stages, the company is trying to attract investors and is very tight with its budget. Once it finds its first high risk taking "angel" investor, it spends more to try to create prototypes and presentations that will attract more risk averse investors who want reassurances that they've got something more substantial. Once the proto hits the trade shows and prospective customers are lined up to order, production commences and it's time to tighten the budget again to fluff up the company's books as it prepares to offer itself up for an IPO or LBO. And once one or the other happens, you're working for yet another corporation that has to present a quarterly bottom line to its stockholders.

The trick to working for these companies is to get onboard right after the angel investor signs up, ride the big spending wave to the first product intro and then be ready move on to your next job at a moment's notice. With any luck, the company will do well on the IPO/LBO so you can exercise your options on your way out the door.

This seems to be more and more the case when dealing with "dot com" type
