Yes, I've done it. But as someone else said, it works fine for internal
documentation but outside the firewall is a different story. Creating an
HTML page can be a breeze in SP 10. Not sure about some of the earlier
versions. If you want to serve up something that has multiple files
associated with it, such as a Captivate course, it becomes problematic. But
for MS docs, Excel files, etc., it is fine. And you can restrict users which
can be nice, depending on your use case.

Had to look up PITA but I do agree. HTML on a server is easier... LOL

Yes you can. There are issues with it, mainly because designing in
SharePoint is a PITA. We use SharePoint mostly as a web server, but we write
our own pages manually, which are fairly simple. It allows us to organize
and present functional documentation in a manner that reduces the need of a
user to look through a pile of unorganized presentation.

For those outside of your firewall it is problematic.
