Definitely not a US thing. My mother links introversion with sadness, family problems, depression and things like that.
She says someone is "introverted" when she is trying to point out he is shy, non talkative and probably has a problem with his own life.

To her, when I say I'm an introvert, the answer is "You shouldn't worry about things you can't change and You'll be a happier person." As if introvert = psychically volatile.
