Open relationships means there is no future long term. When one of you meets someone 'better', it will end nevertheless. Until then you are just each others fallback, and it is a weird situation for the potential partners you meet and will work against you.
Maybe you can remain friends. Maybe you can pick it up later in life. Who knows, but it is better for all to go further with realistic expectations.
