Most of the books I've seen on illustrations seem to me to be heavily weighted toward creating illustrations that support text.

My first project as an "official" technical writer was for a US/Japanese joint venture, and the approach we took to documentation was more of the Japanese approach: illustrations supported by text.

Here are some examples of similar instructions:

http://www.mugenseiki.co.jp/mugen/download/manual/manual_h2001_102910.pdf

http://www.tama.com/world/manual/HH905XP.pdf

I would suggest that you look at existing examples of the kind of instructions you want to create and use them as your guide.

I never had any luck learning how to illustrate from a book. I needed an illustrator to teach me. YMMV.
