Cummings edited the Edison Laboratories internal house organ. His first story was published the same year he left Edison, so it's likely that he took the job with Edison to pay his bills while he was writing fiction and trying to get it published.

As for what inventions he wrote about, probably everything that came out of the Edison Laboratories during his time there, but as internal news articles rather than technical documents.
