I was looking around some USENET sites and found this tidbit. I hope
someone finds it interesting.

IBM, HP AND SUNSOFT ANNOUNCE COOPERATIVE EFFORTS TO CREATE
COMMON DISTRIBUTED OBJECT INTERFACES

June 16, 1993

IBM, Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) and SunSoft, Inc. today announced
plans to work together to enable software portability across the
companies' object-oriented software platforms. This effort will use
standards set forth by the Object Management Group (OMG).

Each company plans to support these interfaces in its own distributed
object development programs, including IBM's SOMobjects, HP's
Distributed Object Management Facility (DOMF) and SunSoft's Project
DOE Distributed Objects Everywhere). A set of common distributed
object interfaces will allow software developers and information
systems managers to create, manage and use applications across
multiple open computing environments. In addition, customers will
benefit from application portability across the respective companies'
software systems.

This is a continuation of ongoing efforts among the three
companies to provide common distributed object interfaces on
their products. Those efforts include the common open software
environment announced in March 1993.

IBM, HP and SunSoft plan to provide common interfaces for
software developers at the Object Request Broker (ORB) and Object
Services levels. The ORB is a mechanism by which objects
transparently make request and receive responses across the
network. Object Services are a set of services required by all
objects for communications, identification, consistent use and
management.

IBM, HP and SunSoft plan to make these interface specifications
publicly available and will continue their leadership role in
making new technology specifications developed by their efforts
available to the OMG for inclusion in future specifications.
