The Society of Exploration Geophysicists uses the following book as a standard
for terms peculiar to geophysical terminology:

R. E. Sheriff, Encyclopedia of Exploration Geophysics, 3rd edition.

What a horrible situation, not to be able to ask your authors for
clarification! Hope this helps.
