SIGDOC is the ACM's Special Interest Group on Documentation (of which I am a
member).

Their conference is their major event each year, and I have enjoyed and been
enlightened by the two I have been able to attend. Although I can't say every
workshop or seminar I attended was worthwhile (can you say that about any
conference?), the conferences were stimulating, and I met interesting people.

It's kind of a mixture of high tech company orientation and academic.

Since I am only affiliated by my SIGDOC membership, and am not active in the
conference organization, these are my opinions only.

However, I CAN tell you, with absolute unreservedness and Canadian Confidence
(is that an oxymoron, fellow Canadians?--inside joke) that Banff, Alberta in
the autumn SHOULD NOT BE MISSED! There are magnificent mountains and lakes,
hiking, horseback riding, hotspringing...it is really one of the world's great
outdoor venues (and there are bars and clubs, for those who like that also).

For Americans: Our dollar is so weak compared to yours at the moment (and
probably into October), that visiting Canada is a bargain.

The advertised rates at the Banff Conference Centre are single rooms at $106
CND (at $.73 to your dollar, so that's about $75 without spending any time
calculating), and $167 CND per day for doubles...including three full meals and
two coffee breaks.

To add your name to the mailing list for preliminary program announcements,
etc., send email to:

Oh, and there's also another conference running back to back with it: the
IPCC 94, which is the annual conference of the IEEE Professional Communication
Society. If you go to both, you can get a bunch of deals. I don't know much
about the IPCC, however.

Go and enjoy--although I probably won't see you there :(
