Thought your comments were insightful, but ever so slightly off the mark.
One small point, but with a huge difference:
Many writers come and go, some with smarts, some who can write great, but
nobody can take an "educated" person, who has not already picked up the
skill, and make them a great writer. Sure, with the proper attitude their
writings can be improved, and that is exactly the problem. We have too
damn many of those types in the business now!! They are mediocre and will
be forever.
I play chess, and no amount of time at the board will ever make me a
prodigy. In contrast, I could write stories well in the third grade. I
once hired a new Computer Science grad who wrote a few articles for the
school rag, and with just a little help, became fair. But when it came to
the sequence of presentation and an exact focus on the audience, .. well,
he just could not catch on -- even after 5 years. He's a great guy, but
should just do programming, and draft writings.
