More importantly, K&R are the authors of the C programming language itself,
as well as significant portions of UNIX--they wrote the first C compiler for
the express purpose of writing UNIX. Many C programmers consider the
referenced book Holy Writ. But what mean the cryptic words "notation
contentions" in the original?
