Regional Conference Focuses on "Lifelong Learning"

The Willamette Valley Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication will
host the Region 7 Conference at the Greenwood Inn in Beaverton, Oregon on
October 19-20, 1995. About 200 technical writers, publications managers,
technical illustrators, journalists, multimedia developers, instructional
designers, engineers, educators and scientists are expected to attend. This
is the Northwest's largest educational event for technical communicators.

The conference will be packed with workshops by top pros, roundtable
discussions, topical progressions and ideal settings to network with
colleagues. Anyone who writes about technology or science should attend.

Learn from Top Experts
The featured speakers offer an outstanding level of expertise for a regional
conference. Allen Korwin is an Arizona-based freelance writer with over 20
years of experience in business, technical, news and promotional
communication. Judy Ramey, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department
of Technical Communication, College of Engineering at the University of
Washington. She teaches and consults nationally in the area of usability
testing. Carol Barnum, Ph.D. is a professor at Southern Tech in Georgia,
consultant to large corporations in the U.S. and author of two books about
technical communication.

In "How to Get Yourself Published at Last," Korwin will share the secrets and
benefits of being published in trade and other publications. Judy Ramey will
present her innovative and effective approach to "Usability Testing." In
"Survival Skills for the Downsized Office," Barnum will offer methods of
working more effectively in high pressure office environments, where
technical communicators need more than sound skills to survive and thrive. An
additional speaker will be named soon to round out the field.

Attend Hands-on Events
In addition to half-day seminars by the featured speakers, there will be
panels, roundtable discussions and progressions to explore down-to-earth
issues technical communicators face at work and with clients. Topics include
moving from print to other media, managing documentation projects or
departments, incorporating new tools into your work, using color, graphics
and icons effectively, creating great documents with little text, and
preparing for different markets.

The conference will take place at the Greenwood Inn in Beaverton. The cost is
$150 for members, $195 for non-members and $95 for students and retired
folks. Registration includes all sessions, breakfast on Thursday and Friday,
a program and conference proceedings. Space is limited, so register now. To
receive a conference registration brochure, call the STC Hotline at (503)
242-1169.
