When I was subscribed to the WIN95 discussion list, the list owner had
established a set of topic keywords, such as HARDWARE:, SOFTWARE:, COMM:, etc.
They were used as the first word of the subject line, with the colon indicating
where the keyword ended. List subscribers could set their subscriptions to
accept/reject individual keyword categories. Then the listowner somehow
implemented a way for the LISTSERVer software to filter messages based on
keywords, and distribute them appropriately. Didn't put any extra work on the
list owner, except to monitor the list for proposed new keywords.

I don't know how he or she did it, but it worked very well on that extremely
busy (400-600 postings a day) list!

What do people (and our famous list owner) think?
