Passive isn't always bad, and attempts to reword sentences
to avoid passive voice can result in awkward, difficult-to-understand
phrasing, as in Dianne Martin's examples.

The original

>"For data reduction, the desired quantity is the response of the band
>after the out-of-band has been removed."

is clear and concise. Leave it as it is.
