An Australian contracting firm suggested to me that I investigate with
the Australian embassy in the U.S. what sorts of visas I could get in
advance that would let me work in Australia should I find some sort of
employment. This company felt that this would be less difficult than
trying to obtain a work permit after arriving in the country on a tourist
visa.

Buck Buchanan left out one very important step in his summary of how to
go
about finding an overseas job:

Check about the necessity for a work permit or a working visa. Some
countries require this, at least for people from some countries (for
example, Australia requires a working visa for US citizens). Although
it's
possible (even easy) for an American to work in Australia without a
working
visa, it is illegal and can be a major nuisance even if you don't get
caught and deported. It may be possible to get such a visa after you
arrive
and find a job (I'm not sure). In any case, it's always wise to find out
what the rules are before you go, and don't rely on anyone else's
experience that's more than a few months old -- the rules keep changing,
especially if there's a change of government.
