Subject: TOC in Word 97

Hello, techwhirlers.

I'm having a consistent problem with the table of contents in one of our
documents in Word 7.0. The document is a system administration manual,
about 100-105 pages long and fairly complex, with about four levels of
headings. The headings themselves needed a fair amount of corrections
(never mind the manual itself) and now I'm having a terrible time doing
anything with the table of contents. Word is refusing (I hate to
anthropomorphize, but there you are) to update the TOC. When I try to run
an automatic update, I get a "Bookmark Error" message at the end of the
TOC, and usually the document freezes altogether. I've tried deleting the
TOC to rebuild it from scratch, but Word won't let me do that, either.
Every time I try the document freezes up.

Maddening. I haven't been on this list too long, and maybe y'all have
discussed this ad nauseum, but I've noticed that often working on long
elaborate documents doesn't work very well in MSWord. In my experience,
the documents corrupt quite easily.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. You can reply to me personally at
ccarr -at- ovid -dot- com if you prefer. Thanks.
