Business Stuff

All,
I'm not sure this is an appropriate forum for this question, so please
respond off list.

I'm working on creating docs for a piece of software that requires
knowledge of the insurance and banking industries as well as bits and
pieces about taxation, business finance and general business principles.
I'm doing ok with the major stuff - banking and insurance, but the "bits
and pieces about taxation, business finance and general business
principles," are giving me a few problems - perhaps they are so basic that
everyone assumes them (ie, what is the difference between a "joint venture"
and a "Partnership"? What is a "Trust" etc.? )

My degrees are in Physics and English with not so much as a single
"general business" course so I haven't got a clue where to start
researching. On top of it, I'm in Toronto, but the customer is in the US.

I was hoping someone could recommend a good general business principles
website - preferably with an excellent glossary of terms. I'm overwhelmed
when I go searching by the sheer number of hits I get., and I don't have
enough basic knowledge to judge what I see when I do find something that
looks like it might be applicable. Likewise with books I can't tell the
good from the bad.

Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance!

Candace
