Try "Save As" and select Word 6 format -- or whatever the client's
platform is.

Else use RTF or straight text.

It's not ALL garbage -- your text is actually in the file somewhere.
It's just that MS used a number of inelegant ways to store data within
a file to allow stuff like faster saves.
