Hi Mike: 
I also missed your original post--most of what Sean Brierley suggested is the best way to go.  However, you do not have to go through the tedious process of adding each individual tag to the catalog by selecting Format|Paragraph Designed|Apply|Create.
 
Try this option instead: File|Utilties|Create and Apply Formats. Frame will automatically create "bona-fide" Frame tags and apply them to your document.  Now your process of importing Word files and making them Frame files (that use the same style tags) will take less than 5 minutes.
