On one count, your coworker is WRONG. "Appear" is no more magical than what's
on the other side of a door when you open it. We've had this debate on the
board many times, but the upshot is that, since "display" is a transitive verb,
it requires an object; therefore "dialog boxes display" is ungrammatical and
incorrect. (However, "dialog boxes display fields" would be OK.)
