For those who were interested here's a summary of what I gleaned from responses:

Responses to my query turned up the following recommended
translation/localization services:

Copper Translation Service <www.coppertranslation.com>
International Language Engineering (ILE) <www.ile.com>
Bowne Global Solutions <www.bowneglobal.com>
Global Software Solutions <www.g11n.com>
4Translation Inc. <www.4translation.com> (notable for their strong support
of PDF format)

The services I contacted previously were:

ALS International <www.alsintl.com>
Contact International <www.contact1.com>
Intertrans <www.itlink.com>
Bureau of Translation Services <www-bts.planet.net>
The Language Bank <www.language-bank.com>

For a general search try<http://aquarius.net>. I found most of the first round
agencies here and they have an extensive list of independent translators as
well.

All of those contacted were very responsive and answered any questions. Most
also asked the right questions about the project. I haven't actually used any of
the above services so I can't make any recommendation about them. All offered
both translation and localization services which is a good thing. Some use
machine-assisted translation and some don't, but even if they do a human
translator does the final work.
