There isn't a whole lot to "learn". It's not
really much more complicated than printing a Word
document.

Use Acrobat's free Word to PDF tool, PDFMaker.
(Rather than PDFWriter or print-to-file followed
by Distiller.)

This lets you control many facets of the
conversion, including the automatic generation of
bookmarks from styles, etc.

Using Acrobat 4, try one of the canned Distiller
job specs (according to your target output use)
before you start dinking around with custom stuff.
