Technical writing is nothing more or less than writing how-to books. There
are lots of famous practitioners:

Hesiod (Works and Days)
Sun Tzu (The Art of War)

Among our contemporaries there are

Peter Norton (all sorts of books on programming PCs)
Bob Villa (This Old House)
Dick Louden (Shelf Help) -- fictional, but famous
