Scott:

The page number, with or without prefix, should
accept your style or character formatting. Select
the entire footer and apply the style you want, or
apply the font characteristics you want.

If you are unable to select the page number when
the footer is open, the page may have been placed
in a floating text box. You'll have to play
hunt-n-click until you're able to select the page
number text, and again apply the formatting you
want.

The prefix setting is determined on a
section-by-section basis. You can access the Page
Number Format dialog from the Insert > Page
Numbers dialog. DON'T click Okay on the Page
Numbers dialog or you'll insert a page number in a
text box. Once you've examined or set the page
number format, click Cancel to close the Page
Numbers dialog.

The prefix depends on autonumbered styles, and is
kind of complicated.
